National Host of Hungary to support R&D

A new organisation called National Host of Hungary Society was established on 12 October. Its members include Matáv, PanTel, Antenna Hungária, the LTO Federation, MTA SZTAKI, Bay Zoltán Foundation, Alcatel, Siemens Telefongyár, System Consulting, Hungarocom, Futuris, the Institute of International Technology, the Chief Communications Inspectorate and the Telecommunication Conciliatory Forum. The Chairman of the Presidency of the National Host of Hungary is Imre Mojzes, its Executive Officer is Zsolt Balassy.

The independent organisation, formed at the initiative of OMFB (National Board for Technical Development) and with the support of KHVM (Ministry of Transport, Communication and Water Management), aims to promote the research, development and introduction of advanced information and communications technologies, services and networks in Hungary similar to the widely used practice of the EU Member States which is beginning to extend to further continents. Another important aim of the Society is to facilitate the participation of Hungarian researchers in the relevant EU programs.

There are National Hosts in a number of countries with a special focus on ACTS, a program on high-speed data transmission as part of the 4th Framework Program of the EU. The activities of the National Host of Hungary are expected to contribute to the participation of the Hungarian research and development society in the program and to the emergence of various broadband services in Hungary.

It is worth mentioning that the National Host of Hungary will participate as a full member in the 5th Framework Program of the EU commencing in 1999. In consideration of a membership fee of 10 billion forints to be paid by the Government in four years, the program will cover the expenses of the Hungarian researchers and developers' successful tender applications in full which, of course, far exceeds the above amount.
